Just outside of Tampa, Florida, Haas Brothers Inc. has been creating custom staircases and woodworking through old fashioned craftsmanship for decades.

Several years ago, Haas Brothers combined old fashioned craftsmanship with modern technology as they launched their new website design.  The best part of the new design:  it’s mobile friendly!

Prior to their new design, their site had the same look for over 5 years.  In addition, if someone viewed their site on a mobile phone or tablet, the text, images, and buttons were very small because it was not a responsive design.

Having a design that wasn’t mobile friendly was hurting them because the user’s experience was not as good and Google wasn’t noting in the search results that their site was mobile friendly (possibly deterring potential customers).

Now, they have a beautiful new look and only a week after they launched their new design, their new website has been identified by Google as being mobile friendly!

Check out what Chris Haas has to say in this video about his experience with OurChurch.com

We appreciate Chris’s recommendation!

I highly recommend Our Church for all your website needs. -Chris Haas, Haas Brothers Custom Staircases, Odessa, FL

If you have a WordPress website, the process replacing your old design (theme) with a new responsive design (theme) requires some understanding of website development.  There will be some customization required, and the new theme may offer options that will require new or changed content.  However, when the redesign is complete, you will have a wonderful new website that will be more user friendly for your visitors and attract new traffic through the search engines.

Check out haasbrothers.com.  What do you think of the new design?  Please post your comments below.

More people come to church on Easter Sunday than on any other day – in normal times.  COVID-19 has upended church attendance and their budgets. With limited to no attendance allowed for Easter Sunday Services in 2021, it is more important than ever that churches engage with their congregations and give them options to easily make an offering.  Here we discuss how one tweak to your direct mail communications can result in greater online giving.

Is your church planning to send out a postcard reminder about Easter Sunday Services, a newsletter or other communication?  Carve out a corner of the mailing to focus on offerings. COVID has forced churches to embrace online giving and it has become the main way donors are giving during the pandemic. Many churches today are using text-to-give for their online giving option but using a QR Code can be even more effective.  Why?

  • Scanning a QR Code is interactive and immediate
  • No typing required
  • No text code or number to remember
  • No apps needed – most smartphones can read a QR with the camera

The good news is that it is not hard to integrate a QR Code into your direct mail.  If you are comfortable with technology, you can generate your own QR Code.  If not, there are turnkey services available that give you the QR Code, process transactions and deposit the funds directly to your bank account.  Let’s walk through the process of getting and using a QR Code.  And if you read to the end of this post, you’ll find bonus information about how you can get a discount on postage by including a QR Code on your mailing!

Where do I get the QR Code?

There are many QR Code generators to choose from.  A simple google search for “Free QR Code Generator” will give you plenty of options. But take care when simply generating a QR Code that links to your giving page.  There are a few factors you should take into consideration before using a QR Code for giving.

Donation Pages Must Be Mobile Friendly

Anyone scanning the QR Code will likely do so with a mobile device.  Therefore, you must be sure your donation page is designed for mobile.  If a donor scans your code and finds that the donation page is difficult to use, they will most likely abandon the transaction.

Avoid Long Donation Forms

If a donor scans your code and is directed to an extremely long form, the chances of abandonment are high.  In today’s digital world, consumers value quick and easy transactions, preferably in just a few clicks.  If they feel the process is going to take too long to complete, they may not even start.

Mobile Wallets Required

Along the same lines as above, if a donor must go to their actual wallet, pull out their credit card and input the information, they may be discouraged.  Again, think simple, quick, and easy.  Most users of mobile devices today are familiar with mobile wallets and have at least one configured on their device.  Take advantage of this to make the giving process seamless.

Offer Multiple Payment Options

For online giving, credit cards are the most popular option.  But for any organization interested in engaging with GenX and Millennials, offering a way to give directly from a bank account is key.  If possible, offer a way to give with either credit cards or bank account.  If you are interested in increasing the number of monthly donors, make sure there is an option to give monthly too!

Turnkey Options

If you are not sure about generating your own QR Code and ensuring it works efficiently, there are turnkey options on the market. Here are two of the most popular:

CheqrPay

CheqrPay is an online fundraising platform designed specifically for nonprofit organizations.  In addition to traditional online fundraising pages, they also offer a QR Code for every campaign.  When scanned, the QR Code leads to a branded, mobile optimized, mobile wallet equipped payment page.  Donors have the option of giving with credit card or logging directly into their bank to make an online transfer.  Monthly and one-time giving options are included. There is no need to download an app or create an account for donors to use this service.

PayPal

PayPal launched their QR Code service in 2020.  Log in to your PayPal account to download the QR Code associated with your account.  By scanning the code, the PayPal or Venmo app will launch and allow the donor to make a payment.  With this service, users must have a PayPal app already installed on their device to make the payment.  PayPal also charges a premium on transactions completed by scanning the code.

Bonus – Postage Discount

The United States Postal Service is encouraging marketers to take advantage of interactive direct mail by offering the “Emerging and Advanced Technology Promotion”.  The promotion runs from March 1, 2021 – August 31, 2021 and offers a 2% discount on postage for any mail that incorporates an interactive QR Code.  Keep in mind that the mail piece must be submitted for approval one week before it is mailed.  More information can be found at https://postalpro.usps.com/promotions/2021-emerging-tech.

Because of the pandemic, churches have been forced to quickly adopt new technology to engage with their congregations.  Direct mail is still one of the best ways to reach out and connect.  By including a QR Code on your direct mail to the congregation, you can encourage generosity in a modern, quick and interactive way.

Church Tech Trends To Consider in 2019 https://www.ourchurch.com/blog/church-tech-trends-to-consider-in-2019/ https://www.ourchurch.com/blog/church-tech-trends-to-consider-in-2019/#comments Thu, 18 Jul 2019 15:07:53 +0000 https://www.ourchurch.com/blog/?p=55023 Technology is always evolving, and it’s vital for church leaders to understand how to respond to these changes

This is a guest post by Ricardo Hernandez.

Technology is always evolving, and it’s vital for church leaders to understand how to respond to these updates. If you look back 20 years or more, you’ll notice how drastically the landscape has altered. Shifting tech trends are increasingly playing a more prominent role in influencing how the church reaches people with the gospel.

Today, many churches across the world are starting to leverage technology to great effect. But as everything continues to change around us, what trends should churches focus on in 2019?

Mobile First

Mobile use has been on an upward trajectory ever since the launch of the first smartphone. It’s the channel of choice for many churchgoers, especially millennials. We’ve seen churches begin to actively use mobile technology to target individuals and grow their relationship with members.

To better engage this younger generation, you have to reach them where they are. And, that’s on mobile.

Click to share this image on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram

Almost 92% of all millennials own a smartphone, and the vast majority are active on social media. Being present on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook opens an opportunity for faith leaders to serve an even bigger audience.

In keeping with a mobile-first strategy, churches are also optimizing their websites for mobile devices. And with Google now changing its search engine algorithms to favor mobile-friendly friendly sites, expect this trend to continue into 2019.

Church Apps

Another prevailing church tech trend is the use of apps, both on mobile and TV. Churches are utilizing apps for a myriad of reasons such as a source of up-to-date information on church events and compile an archive of all past sermons. Many religious leaders are also using church apps to offer mid-week sermons and interact with members in real-time. These apps feature tools such as a prayer request wall and social media integration where members can submit prayer requests and comment on social media posts respectively. This trend is only going to grow as churchgoers become more tech-savvy and digitally-native.

Video Streaming

Live streaming is no longer the sole domain of megachurches with big budgets. 2019 will be remembered as the year small and medium-size faith organizations joined the digital frontier with live streaming services and video-on-demand. Thanks to the rise of OTT services like Roku, churches can now stream their events and sermons at a fraction of the cost.

Roku’s streaming potential has given churches enormous potential to increase viewership and reach more people across the world. With the service, church members can view live church services or see past sermons on their TV.

With a Roku channel, churches can broadcast their Sunday services live and enable those who cannot be physically present due to sickness, old age or personal commitments to participate. It helps keep members connected to the church and allows them to share the joy with their friends and family.

If you are yet to join the trend, you might want to consider it. Roku lists all channels publicly making it easier to attract new viewers. Content solutions such as MAZ can help get your church on television apps such as Roku easily and with features that will fit your church’s needs.

In Conclusion

The church has embraced technology and given that the year is still young, expect to see several church tech trends becoming more standard. Video streaming, church apps, and the shift to a mobile-first approach are just three of the major trends. There are many more ways in which faith-based organizations can leverage technology and attain new heights.

Take 10 seconds to answer the following questions:

  • Do you carry a checkbook everywhere you go?
  • How often do you have more than $50 cash with you?

Most people probably answered “no” and “not often” (Being a parent of 3 children, I rarely have more than $20 😉

But if you are only offering cash or check as a way for people to give, you are telling your members and supporters, “We love you and appreciate your giving but not enough to meet you where you are.”

The financial landscape has changed drastically in the last 20 years and it is time for churches to catch up.

We introduced Your Online Giving App (YODA) to get you caught up and meet your members where they are.

This is a guest post by Alex Levin. Read more about how you can guest post on Christian Web Trends here.

The first month of 2018 is about to end and we have been on the lookout for big surprises when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO). There’s not much excitement in the air, but for now, here are 8 SEO trends that you should keep an eye on this year:

  1. Voice Search

The integration of voice recognition and search functionality into a nifty feature called voice search has been around for a while. However, studies show that less than half of users utilize voice search. There’s also less than 30% of users who believe that voice search is accurate. There’s so much growth that voice search could have and we believe that 2018 is a good year to expect that growth.

This year, we see that it’s a good idea to gear your site to voice search. Don’t just focus on what users might type as they do searches on your website, but what they might voice out. Make sure as well that your voice recognition can capture multiple languages especially if your site has a long reach.

A hallmark characteristic of voice search is using the phrase “near me” in the search term. People use voice search for searching and asking for directions. We’ve seen some examples of these trends through Google Trends:

Source: Google Trends

If you can target those searches and the relevant keywords associated with that search, you will surely target those searches within your vicinity. Why? Google’s Possum affected more than half of local search engine results, targeting these three factors: Proximity, Reviews, and Accuracy.

Once you’ve optimized your site properly (accuracy), voice searches will prefer to show your church more than the others that aren’t deemed relevant.

  1. Relevance 2.0

Google has been strengthening its ability to tell which sites have quality content. One of the ways they do it now is using Latent Semantic Indexing, a process of studying which words usually go together by looking at billions of pages and checking how often they appear together.

RankBrain, part of Google’s algorithm help decide which pages to feature depending on the inquiry made by the users. What RankBrain pulls up are those that contain words that are usually together with what’s in the search box. So make sure that you’re content are well-strategized. You will also have to make sure to include keywords that will foster relevance of your content to the topic you’re talking about.

Let’s take OurChurch’s blog. While their core service is SEO, they stick to their target market’s interest; making them more relevant to their potential clients as well.

Stick to your church. You can post everything and anything related to your church. Church activities, events, announcements – all these are relevant to your church. If you’re running out of topics, you can always refer to this list of 25 blog topics for your church blog.

  1. Responsive Web Pages

Higher and higher number of visitors are seen to be coming from mobile devices. Although there are still lots of desktop users, it is really evident that browsing on handheld devices is almost preferable, especially that handhelds are becoming more capable year by year. This being the case, websites that are looking forward to ranking this year must pay huge attention in ensuring that their pages are responsive across different platforms. From aesthetics to performance, your site and its pages must be able to adapt to be at their best when opened from wherever and whenever.

Check this Chicago church. A quick search on “churches in chicago” will show you that this church is ranking on the top of the page, only below Yelp searches.

  1. SERP Features

The search engine results pages are expected to gain developing features over time. We have seen SERPs contains links in blue, and results that stand out with ads. SERP grew to contain photos, videos, and more. It will be very difficult to gain and keep the top spot nowadays without truly expending effort to stand out.

There is a number of tools out there which can show your rank and can also determine what is holding you back from achieving better. Also, always be up-to-date on which features matter most for SERPs now.

The first step you can do is to jump into this schema generator and select “Catholic Church” from the dropdown list. Once you fill up your details, copy the code and implement it on your homepage.

  1. HTTPS

While Google has made secure connections a contributing factor to a site’s ranking, it’s a surprise how there are still a big number of websites that do not move to HTTPS. If you are one of those sites, then this is one of the reasons why you are not performing that well. This year, we expect Google will give more weight to security through HTTPS so sites should do their part in helping keep users away from harm.

It’s also not that difficult nor is it that costly to invest in security tools but this is essential not only for the company but also more for the customers that need to transact via credit card.

  1. Accelerated Mobile Pages

Again, the huge number of mobile users who do searches is recognized by Google and actually makes it a point for websites to ensure measures that will have their loading speed faster. Web pages visited via mobile devices should be as quickly and beautifully as those that are visited through a desktop computer. Google gives points to sites with great page rendering speeds. At the end of the day, there is no reason why pages should ignore their site’s usability in every device. But those who do take the effort of strategizing their sites to be compatible and of commendable performance on any device deserve a high ranking.

  1. Linkless backlinks

One of the biggest stars of SEO in the past is backlinks. Backlink optimization was very huge as links are some of the key trust signals back then. This might just not be the case anymore sometime soon. Bing is said to already be using linkless mentions as a ranking factor. Google is expected to follow sooner or later.

  1. Local SEO

A lot of searches nowadays revolve around places and items within a close distance from the user. This includes users looking for nearby restaurants and shops. Local SEO then is seen to be huge this year. Businesses would try to immediately capture clients who are looking for providers that are just nearby; thus, the need for local SEO. This is especially great for churches with a short reach.

However for those who have to reach bigger markets, what you can do in order to tap a wider reach, is to do local SEO everywhere your business goes too. Local SEO is seen to be a very effective method to rank so treat it seriously. Again, we pointed out that searches are more personalized and “near me” searches are promising searches for your church. Optimize your website with OurChurch’s great guide to local SEO for new church ministries.

Let the 2018 Trends Behold

With all the intricacies of SEO, including the ones that surprised us in the past, we believe that there are still a lot more that are just about to surface. We believe 2018 has a lot more to offer but for now, dwell on these 8 initial trends that we prepared for you.

Always remember that surprising trends will be out there in due time. Always be on the lookout for trends on the horizon so that you won’t get left behind. So keep your eyes open for trends and jump on it at the right time!

Is your church or ministry struggling with this? https://www.ourchurch.com/blog/church-ministry-struggling-with-this/ Wed, 24 Jan 2018 14:34:41 +0000 https://www.ourchurch.com/blog/?p=53117 Many of you shared this struggle with us. Help is coming soon.

Yesterday, I sent a quick email asking, “What are the 2 biggest challenges your church or ministry faces when it comes to giving/tithing?”

We received a phenomenal response and these are some of the challenges you shared with us in your replies.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • “So many of our members only give what’s left over. We need to help them give God the first “fruits” of their labor.”
  • “We had to cancel services because of the storm and so we will miss this week’s offering.”
  • “Our young adults just aren’t giving.”
  • “When people miss services because their sick or traveling, they don’t give.”
  • “I forgot to bring my checkbook again.”

Part of the reason so many churches and ministries are struggling financially is because they are not properly utilizing technology that has been around for many years.

Many churches still limit giving options to physical checks or cash.

Other churches offer online giving but only with a one-time giving option (simple PayPal button).

Because of the limitations of these types of giving, many ministries suffer during summer months, when attendance is low for other reasons, and because many young adults don’t write checks or even have a checking account.

In fact…

  • By 2025 millennials (born between 1981 -2005) will account for 46% of all income but more than 20% have never written a check.
  • 94% of consumers under the age of 35 regularly use online banking.
  • Millennials are the parents of young children and the life blood of your church

So what does all this mean?

You need to adjust your giving options to what people are comfortable using, making it easy for people to give to your church.

We will be launching a solution that will make giving easy, affordable and secure.

Tomorrow, I will go into more detail about this solution and the one-time offer we will be making.

In the mean time, post a comment below and share with us and your fellow readers…

Animated GIFs are making a comeback.

When the World Wide Web first became popular, animated GIFs of spinning crosses and flapping doves (as shown below) were all over church websites.

As the Internet matured, we came to realize that animations just for animations sake was, well, cheesy.  And animated GIFs became the butt of web development jokes.

More than a decade later animated GIFs have become bigger and more popular than ever.

But today’s animated GIFs have almost nothing in common with their 1990s predecessors.

Today’s GIFs are more like short video loops.  They’re not usually used on websites but are all over social media, text messaging and to a lesser extent in blog posts.  They’re used to express a quick thought in a creative way.

They often come from popular movies and TV shows.

There are lots of GIF makers online that enable anyone to create a GIF from a video clip in seconds.  Often times news and sports highlights (and lowlights) become viral GIFs within moments.

So, how about you?

Are you using GIFs?  If so how?  Got a favorite?  Post it in the comments.

Share and Enjoy !
