Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day is an annual awareness day observed on April 22 to focus attention on environmental protection and stewarding our planet. It’s a good time for Christians and Christian organizations to consider what we can do to protect and care for creation.

What the Bible Says about Protecting the Environment

After God created human beings, the first job he gave us was to care for creation.

Genesis 1:28 says, “God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.‘”

Just after that in Genesis 2:15 it’s recorded, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

Clearly God has given us responsibility to care for creation and steward it wisely.

7 Ways Your Website Can Help You Go Green

There are many things Christian churches, schools, ministries and businesses can do to protect and care for the environment. Because we here at OurChurch.com are focused on websites and online communication, we’re going to focus on the ways your website and online tools can help your organization be environmentally-friendly.

1) Streamline the Sunday bulletin.

Some churches require a small forest each week to produce all the bulletin inserts for every ministry and event in the church.

We strongly recommend a communications strategy that makes your website the hub of your communications. When you do this, you don’t need to print every detail about every event. Just put the basic info for each event – name of the event, when, where and why someone would want to participate and then, “See the website for more info” Boom – end of bulletin inserts!

Some churches have even completely eliminated their print bulletins in favor of an online bulletin.

2) Do registrations and signups online.

Get rid of the printed signup sheets and registration forms lying around on tables in the lobby of your church or school. Online event registration will simplify your life, make it easier for people to signup anytime and anywhere, and save paper and ink. Online event registration can be done on your website with a plugin, or as we discussed earlier with Google Forms.

3) Use online forms.

Just as you can replace paper signup sheets with online signups on your website, you can also replace all kinds of paper forms with online forms. Online form builders are easy to use and can be used to create any type of form you currently have in print.

4) Put your manuals and handbooks online.

Do you have an huge employee handbook you print and give to each member of your staff? Do you have written policies and procedures for your church, school or business?

These things can be uploaded and placed in a staff-only section of your website.

Or even better, they can be put into an online file-sharing service like Google Docs. Another great feature of Google Docs is when a document need updating, you can do it quickly and easily online, and when you do everyone with access instantly has the updated version. No more need to distribute updates or wonder if everyone is using the latest version.

Putting instructions in Google Docs is also extremely helpful for training new staff and volunteers. No need to get people to remember everything or carry around paper instructions. Google Docs can be accessed anywhere on a smart phone.

5) Replace your paper newsletter with an online newsletter.

The printed monthly newsletter has been one of the most prevalent forms of communication for churches, schools and nonprofits for decades. Think about how many pages of newsletters you print every month. Depending on the size of your organization, switching to an online newsletter could save thousands of pages of paper a month. If you mail your newsletter you could save lots of money on postage (and the fuel used to deliver them.) Put an electronic copy of your newsletter on your website and send it out via email.

If you are a church with people who are older or don’t go online much, you may get some pushback. So, you may need to compromise a little by mailing the printed newsletter to those who specifically request it or having a handful of print copies available in the foyer of your church.

6) Forgo direct mail ads for SEO and/or Google Ads.

Some Christian churches, schools, and businesses use direct mail postcards to try to reach people in their community. While this can be effective, eventually the vast majority of them will end up in your local landfill.

Search Engine Optimization and Google Ads are a most cost-effective way to reach people in your community AND there is no waste.

7) Partner with a Green Web Hosting Company.

We at OurChurch.com love the outdoors and do everything we can to care for creation. We have already taken all of the steps above.

Additionally, our entire team works from home offices, which means no corporate office to build, furnish, heat, cool and clean. We’re also not consuming gasoline or polluting the environment on our commutes to work.

The bottom line…

How you use your website can have a big impact on how you care for creation.

How you use your website can have a big impact on how you care for creation.

Easter is coming up fast! Are you ready?

Easter is one of the best times of the year for churches to connect with people in their community, and one of the best times of the year to help people deepen their relationship with God. Therefore, our focus until Easter is going to be on helping you prepare for Easter and then taking things to the next level after Easter.

Let’s start with your church website.

Because your website is the front door to your church, it is important to do these…

5 Things To Prep Your Church Website For Easter

1. Make sure you have Easter service times prominently displayed on your homepage.

Even if your church isn’t changing service times for Easter services, it is important to have your “Easter Service Times” displayed near the top of your homepage.

2. Post info/links to other Easter weekend activities.

If your church is having an egg hunt, Easter brunch, or any other special activities, give special attention to those events on your homepage.

But, you don’t have to have all the details of every event on your homepage. Usually it’s better to just post a headline or promotional graphic for each event and have it link to a calendar or event page that gives more details.

3. Create a welcome message.

Although this is a good idea for any time of the year, it is especially important at Easter when so many new visitors will be attending.

The welcome video should be short (1-2 minutes), friendly, and… yes, welcoming. The information included should address the question, “What should I expect if I visit your church?”

4. Remove outdated information.

If you haven’t gotten around to the spring cleaning of your website (removing of old, outdated information), you absolutely should do it now.

Nothing screams that your church is “irrelevant” more than outdated, irrelevant information on your website.

5. Volunteers needed.

Because attendance will be higher than usual, you will likely need more volunteers than usual. Give special attention on your website to the need for volunteers and link to a page that gives specifics on what serving opportunities are needed most and who to contact for each.

Easter is one of the best times of the year for churches to reach out to people in their communities.

Not only do more people attend church services on Easter Sunday than any other Sunday of the year, but many people who are not Christian are open to Easter-related family events.

Before we get to some great ideas for promoting and sharing your Easter services and events online, here are…

11 Easter ideas for churches

1) Host an Easter Egg Hunt. An Easter egg hunt is a classic way to celebrate the season and bring families together. Consider hosting an Easter egg hunt on your church property, or partner with a local park to host the event. Be sure to have plenty of eggs and candy for all the children, and consider offering other activities like face painting or balloon animals.

If you host your Easter egg hunt the Saturday before Easter, you can invite families to join you for your Easter service(s) the next day.

2) Hold a Sunrise Service. A sunrise service is a beautiful way to start Easter Sunday. Hold the service outdoors to watch the sunrise together. Even better, gather in a public park (with permission) where passers-by can see and join you. Offer hot coffee and pastries to warm them up.

3) Offer a Free Community Meal. Hosting a free community meal is a great way to reach out to those in need in your community. Consider offering breakfast on Easter, either immediately after your Sunrise Service or immediately before your regular Easter Sunday service.

Be sure to promote the event to your community and partner with other local organizations to spread the word.

4) Create Easter Baskets for Those in Need. Many families struggle to provide Easter baskets for their children. Consider creating Easter baskets for those in need in your community. Partner with local organizations to identify families who could benefit from this outreach.

Invite the families to pick up the Easter baskets from your church the Friday or Saturday before Easter. Or better yet, give them the option to have you bring the basket to them. Remember, it’s not just about the items in the basket, it’s about creating a personal connection, welcoming them, and letting them know you care about them.

5) Offer Easter Photos. Set up a photo booth at your church or at a community event and offer free Easter photos to attendees. This is a fun way to capture the spirit of the season and create lasting memories for families.

You can also share those photos on your social media profiles. (Be sure to get permission and ask families to sign a photo release.)

6) Have a Palm Sunday Parade. A Palm Sunday parade is a great way to celebrate the start of Holy Week. Consider having your church members create their own palms and parade through your community.

7) Host an Easter Play. Hosting an Easter play is a creative way to bring the story of the resurrection to life. Include members of your congregation in the production to make it more personal.

8) Offer Free Car Washes. Offer free car washes to your community in the days leading up to Easter. This is a good way to reach out to your community and show them that your church cares about their needs. Alternatively, you could ask for donations with those donations going to a good cause.

9) Create an Easter Prayer Walk. A prayer walk is a great way to encourage prayer and reflection during the Easter season. Create a trail with stations for prayer and reflection, and encourage attendees to take their time and meditate on the meaning of Easter.

Ideally, this would be available to people throughout Holy Week so they can do it on their own schedule and at their own pace.

10) Host a Concert. A concert is a great way to bring your community together in celebration of Easter. You don’t necessarily have to bring in a big name Christian artist. It could be your church’s worship team or choir. You could invite the choirs and worship team’s from other churches. Or you could put together a community orchestra and choir to perform something like Handel’s Messiah.

11) Host an Easter Craft Fair. An Easter craft fair is another fun opportunity to get people in your community on your church campus and make some connections. If you host it soon before Easter, you can invite people to your Easter services. You could also have your music ministry perform during the craft to get people into the spirit of the holiday and introduce them to your church’s style of music.

Hopefully, one or more of these Easter ideas for church will resonate with you and your church. Or maybe they will help spark a completely new and unique idea!

Once you and your church have discussed, prayed over, and decided which Easter outreach ideas you’re going to do this year, it’s time to think about how you’re going to get the word out. So, here are

11 Easter Online Outreach Ideas

1) Create a Landing Page. Create a dedicated landing page on your church website that provides all the details of your Easter services and events. This page should be easy to navigate, and the information should be displayed prominently.

2) Utilize Social Media. Social media is an effective way to reach out to your community and promote your Easter services and events. Utilize platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to create posts and share information about your Easter services and events.

3) Ask Your Congregation to Utilize Social media. Posting info to the church’s social media profiles will only reach so many people. If you really want to maximize your social media reach, get the people of your church fired up and excited about sharing your church’s social media posts.

4) Use Hashtags. Utilize Easter-themed hashtags on social media to increase the visibility of your Easter services and events. Hashtags like #Easter, #EasterServices, and #EasterEvents can be used to reach a wider audience.

5) Share Testimonials. Share testimonies from members of your congregation about the impact that Easter has had on their lives. These testimonials can be shared on social media and on your website to help promote your Easter services and events.

6) Promote Early: Begin promoting your Easter services and events several weeks in advance. This will give your community ample time to plan to attend and make arrangements if necessary.

7) Utilize Email. Email is still one of the most effective ways to reach out to members of your congregation with info about your Easter services and events, especially people who may have fallen out of the habit of participating in Sunday services regularly. Send out regular emails leading up to Easter, and encourage your congregation to share the information with their friends and family.

8) Use Graphics and Videos. Create graphics and/or promotional videos for your Easter services and events. These visuals can be shared in your services, on your website, on social media and via email to catch the attention of your audience.

9) Use Online Advertising. Consider using online advertising to promote your Easter services and events. Platforms like Google Ads and Facebook Ads can be used to target specific audiences and promote your Easter services and events.

10) Partner with Local Organizations. Partner with local organizations to promote your Easter services and events. This could include partnering with local schools, community centers or the Chamber of Commerce to share information via email or on their social media channels.

11) Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Make sure people can find your church when the search online. For help with that check out The Ultimate Guide to Church SEO and How to Get Your Church Website to Rank for “Easter Service Near Me”

And if you’d like some help with church web design and church SEO from our team that’s been doing it for more than 25 years, click or fill out the form below to schedule a call.

*BONUS* Perhaps the best Easter outreach idea doesn’t involve a church event at all… Maybe the best way to reach the people in your community is to equip and encourage every follower of Jesus in your church to be able to share their faith, their testimony, and the love of Jesus with the people they already know in their neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and community organizations!

Easter is the time to share the love and hope we can only experience in Jesus.

Searching for church Valentine ideas?

Valentine’s Day provides a great opportunity for churches to talk about love and demonstrate love to others.

Over the years, I’ve had numerous conversations with church leaders and church communicators – in person, on Twitter, and on Facebook – about church Valentine ideas. I’m amazed at all the creative things churches are doing!

The church Valentine ideas I’ve heard tend to fall into two categories. The first is Valentine social media campaigns designed to point people to the love of God. The second is Valentine events designed to help couples develop loving, Christ-centered relationships.

11 Church Valentine Ideas for Social Media

As you consider various social media ideas, remember that social media has (at least) two purposes. First, it can lead to discussion, engagement, and deeper relationships among the people who are already a part of your church.

Second, it can help people who are not a part of your church to connect with Christians and to hear Christian perspectives on love and relationships. In other words, church Valentine ideas for social media are good church outreach ideas.

1) Maybe a “love your neighbor” campaign type thing….?? @PastorJenna

2) We are posting daily “love” scripture texts on FB. Pleasantly surprised how many people click on them to read them. @revjenn

3) Connect with people who feel a little more lonely on #ValentinesDay, and invite them in to community. @crazypastor

4) Valentine’s Day is another big Chocolate day. Another chance to educate about fair trade and justice. @FatPastor

5) I will probably post about the real Valentine @PastorJoelle

6) Our school kids are making ecards that the senior citizens in the computer learning class will open @Conductor222

7) How making/sharing a meme of Jesus with the caption: Who love you, baby? @RevWeb

8) Remind everyone they are loved EVERYDAY! #YouAreBeloved @thelepper

9) Used 1 Cor 13 on blog to talk about God’s love through storytelling @caseyfitzgerald

10) Flip the script – tell the world that God’s LOVE is for creation, animals, people – not just romantic love @J_at_Seminary

11) I could envision an Instagram/twitter campaign to post pictures answering question, “What is love?” @FatPastor

Bonus: It’s also the perfect excuse to quote risqué verses from Song of Solomon. 😉

11 Church Valentine Ideas for Events

Just as Valentine’s Day social media ideas can impact both the people who are already a part of your church as well as those who are not a part of it, church Valentine events can impact both groups as well.

Everyone wants to love and be loved! This includes Christians and non-Christians, those who are a part of your church and those who aren’t. So, when you do these church Valentine’s Day events, be sure to communicate them both inside and outside your community of believers.

1) Hold a Blood Drive and hand out chocolates to blood donors! @MeredithGould

2) Our church is doing vow renewals – should publicize on soc.med. @vcwoodbury

3) Free childcare for church families by the youth group. -Melissa Bull

4) We do a “Love Week” campaign and encourage serving the community and random acts of kindness. -Carly Byram

5) Our student ministry holds a Valentines Gala each year. One of our guys who volunteers with them is a chef and has the kids cook a 5star meal, our associate pastor is a photographer so each couple gets their pic taken, also a silent auction, and entertainment. $30 per person. It’s their biggest fundraiser each year -Sherry Polk

6) We do an event called The Great Date Night where we bring in a comedian or entertainer and provide childcare. -Meredith Thompson

7) Father daughter dance. -Delores Eilrich

8) Our student ministry does signing telegrams in our AM/PM services the Sunday before Valentine’s Day. They also deliver goodies/flowers on Valentine’s day. It’s a great fundraiser for them and probably their biggest all year. -Kristin Coats

9) We’re having a children’s ministry serve project making v-day cards for nursing home residents that will be delivered early next week for distribution by the nursing home staff. -Almeda McMullen Smith

10) We have a Love out Loud Day on the 13th at our local food pantry. Providing an extra bag of pantry staples to 330 families! -Veronica P Brunson

11) XO Marriage conference simulcast in our church. We do a catered meal on Friday night. It is a great way to invest in the marriages in and around our church. -River Live

Let us love one another, for love comes from God. -1 John 4:7-9

Love Calls for Intentional Outreach

The bible tells us “God so loved the world, that he gave…” and He loves us so much that “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Jesus love compelled him to leave his “comfort zone” of heaven and take action.

If you feel like lately your church has been too inward focused, or you sense that God is calling you to do more to read the people in your community, consider the role your website has in this.

 • Is your website effectively communicating the love Jesus and your church has for the people in your community?
 • Are the people who are searching for a church or searching for answers able to find your church website in search engines?

If you’re not sure or want to do better with website design or search engine optimization, fill out the form below (mobile) or to the right (desktop) to Schedule a Discovery Call with a member of our team.

Post a comment and discuss:

 1. What is your church doing on social media to tie into the Valentine’s Day holiday?
 2. Got any other ideas?

The post 22 Church Super Bowl Party Ideas appeared first on Christian Web Trends Blog: Church Websites, Design, SEO.

]]>
Hosting a church Super Bowl party can be a great way to bring members of the congregation together for a fun and festive event.

It’s one of the most memorable events for my church every year!

A church Super Bowl party can also be a great church outreach event, which your church can promote and church members can invite their friends to a fun event where they can meet other members of your church, get familiar with your campus, and have some fun.

So. we’ve got all kids of Super Bowl party ideas including… Decoration Ideas, Food Ideas, Photo Ideas, Party Games, Spiritual Focus Ideas, and Marketing Ideas!

22 Church Super Bowl Party Ideas

Super Bowl Decoration Ideas

Let’s start by decorating to get everyone into a festive mood…

1) Football Theme. Obviously anything football theme will work.

2) Team Colors. Decorate with the team colors of the two teams – banners, balloons, table cloths, plates, etc. If you’re near the city of one of the teams in the Super Bowl, forget about being unbiased, go all out for your team!

Super Bowl Food Ideas

Every Super Bowl party needs food, right?

3) Chili cook-off. My church does a chili cook-off/contest as a part of our Super Bowl party every year. Participants sign-up in advance to bring a crockpot of their secret-recipe chili. The chilis are shuffled around and numbered so nobody knows who made each chili. You can have judges decide the winners or do it by popular vote.

4) Football-shaped food. Make or buy food decorated to look like footballs. Popular options include cookies, cakes, candy, and deviled eggs. Search Google or Pinterest for more ideas.

5) Classic football grub. Everyone loves the usual tailgating food – hamburgers, hotdogs, sub sandwiches, chips, sodas, etc. When in doubt, go with what you know.

Super Bowl Photo Ideas

Photos are a great way for both your church and the people at the party to share and remember this event.

6) Photo booth. Setup a photo booth with football related props. If possible create a backdrop with the name of your church, social media @, or a #Hashtag

7) Photographer. Designate at least one staff member or volunteer to be the official photographer, responsible for taking pics.

8) Share Your Photos. Your designated photographer can post to photos to your church social media profiles during the game. Other options include:

 • posting a collage to social sites after the game
 • adding a photo gallery to your church website
 • publishing a Thank You blog post w photos the next day
 • sharing pics from the event the following Sunday during the service.

Super Bowl Party Games

While the “Big Game” may be the centerpiece of the event, other side games will make your church Super Bowl party unique and memorable.

9) Guess the winner & score. Set up a pool for participants to make predictions about the outcome of the game. This could be done as a 50-50 fundraiser where people have to pay to enter and the prize is half the entry fees. Or let people participate for free and give a prize of your choosing.

10) Box Game / Football Squares. In this game people try to guess the last digit of each team’s score. Draw, print, or purchase a 10×10 grid. Put the name of one team across the top, the other team along the left side. Participants make a 2 digit guess, and their name gets placed in that square. Each 2-digit number combination can only be chosen by one person. The person who chose the right 2-digit combination wins a prize!

11) Competitions. How about a longest throw competition? Other options include an accuracy challenge, scoring points by throwing at targets, or a longest field goal competition. Do them before the game starts or during half time.

12) Cheer contest. Another halftime option is a cheer or dance contest. Give groups the opportunity to create an original 30-60 second cheer or dance they show off during halftime.

Super Bowl Spiritual Focus Ideas

We would be remiss if we didn’t suggest some church Super Bowl party ideas to remind people that there are more important things than football.

13) Prayer. It’s expected that the pastor will pray at the beginning of the event, before people dive into the food. Don’t miss the opportunity. Don’t rush it. Pray that God would be active in your event, helping people to find acceptance, build relationships, and know they are loved by God and the people of your congregation.

14) Halftime message. The Super Bowl halftime shows have gained a reputation for being either really raunchy or really boring. Why not turn it off and do something of spiritual value. Remember people will want to use halftime to use the restroom and get some more food, so keep it shortI Am Second is a great site that has 2-4 minute videos from well know people, including football players, talking about what it means to put God first.

15) Purposeful Party Favors. Give people a memento for the road that has spiritual value. It could include a small devotional booklet, a printout of your church’s upcoming events, or something to put on their desk to remind them to pray.

Church Super Bowl Party Online Marketing Ideas

Of course, none of this maters if nobody shows up for your event. There are lots of great opportunities to spread the word about your church Super Bowl party online.

16) Web page. Create a page on your church website specifically for your church Super Bowl party with all the details

17) Promotional graphic. Add a graphic to your homepage to promote the event and link to your Super Bowl party page.

18) Share on social media. Share the promotional graphic and link to the Super Bowl party page on your social media profiles several times in the weeks leading up to the event.

19) Empower your people. Encourage your church members to share/retweet the Super Bowl party posts, so their friends see them.

20) Create a Facebook Event for the event.

21) Run paid Facebook Ads for the event.

22) Run paid Google Ads for the event.

Food for thought…

I coach football. But the good I can do to glorify God along the way is my real purpose. -Tony Dungy, Super Bowl winning head coach

4 Types of Goals You Should Set This Year https://www.ourchurch.com/blog/4-types-of-goals/ https://www.ourchurch.com/blog/4-types-of-goals/#comments Tue, 07 Jan 2025 15:00:16 +0000 https://ourchurch.com/blog/?p=55703 If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else.

The post 4 Types of Goals You Should Set This Year appeared first on Christian Web Trends Blog: Church Websites, Design, SEO.

]]>
Setting goals is critically important if you want to get anywhere in life – career, personal development, family, and even ministry.

This is because without goals, our day-to-day activities tend to get hijacked by whatever seems most urgent, pressure from other people, or what we feel like doing in the moment. Or as legendary baseball player (and amateur philosopher) Yogi Berra once said…

If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll probably end up somewhere else. -Yogi Berra

Our team here at OurChurch.Com recently finalized our 2025 strategic plan. It’s the 20th consecutive year we’ve developed a strategic plan.

We have learned a lot about goals over these last two decades. Perhaps the most important is that there are 4 different types of goals. These 4 types of goals are universal. They can be applied to any kind of organization. I also use them in my personal goal-setting each year.

4 Types of Goals

1) Objectives

Objectives are broad goals. They are what you would like to see happen in the next year. Some objectives that organizations or people might have include…

 • Church: Connect with people in our community
 • Ministry: Serve the poor
 • Business: Increase sales
 • Personal: Become a better parent

Objectives define WHAT you want to accomplish but not HOW.

2) Projects

Projects goals are the “how;” they’re specific things you are going to do to accomplish your objectives.

For example, if one of your objectives is “connect with people in our community,” your project goals might be:

3) Processes

Process goals are also how you’re going to achieve your objectives. But while projects goals are achieved when the project is complete, process goals are regularly recurring tasks. Some examples of process goals are:

 • send follow-up cards to new church visitors every Monday
 • update the website every Tuesday
 • write a weekly blog post
 • post new content to Facebook four times a week

4) Metrics

Metrics are the specific data you are going to track and the specific numerical goals you want to reach to indicate success. Numerical goals are things like:

 • increase sales by 10%
 • reach 1,000 website visitors a month by the end of the year
 • start 10 new life groups

When people hear the word “goals,” many people’s thoughts immediately go to these types of metrics goals, but I would caution against that.

In my opinion, our culture tends to over-emphasize results, which we have much less control over rather. We would be better served by focusing on project and process goals, which we have more control over. What do you think?

Consider this post part one. We’ll talk more about how to develop each type of goal next week.

As Steve Keating says…

We seldom fulfill our dreams until we turn them into a goal and develop a plan to achieve them. -Steve Keating

We seldom fulfill our dreams until we turn them into a goal and develop a plan to achieve them. -Steve Keating

If we don’t pray about these things, ask God for guidance and write down where we sense him leading us, we have a tendency to get distracted, lose our way, or forget exactly what God has called us to do.

Our focus this month at OurChurch.Com is on helping you set and achieve the right kinds of goals for your church, ministry or business. The post 12 Church Outreach Ideas for New Year’s Eve & the New Year appeared first on Christian Web Trends Blog: Church Websites, Design, SEO.

]]>
I know… If you’re a pastor or church leader, you are up to your eyeballs in preparations for Christmas Eve, Advent services, and Christmas- themed church outreach events. But…

Before you can say Kris Kringle, we’ll be turning the calendar to 2025 – a new year with all kinds of new possibilities and new opportunities for church outreach events ideas to meet new peopled, start new relationships, and introduce new people to the good news of Jesus.

It’s important to figure out your church New Years events now, so that on Christmas Eve, you can invite first time guests to take a “Next Step.”

When it comes to church outreach event ideas for New Years, there are two categories of ideas: those intended to connect with people on New Year’s Eve, and those intended to connect with people in early January when people are looking to start. We’ve got a bunch of each.

5 Church New Year’s Eve Event Ideas

New Year’s Eve is known for its late night parties that often involve alcohol. While we here at OurChurch.Com don’t have anything against consuming alcohol in moderation, we also know that many people are looking for an alternative to the usual New Year’s Eve party.

1. New Year’s Eve church worship service

Plan a night of extended worship and praise music to set a positive, Christ-centered tone for the new year.

2. New Year’s Eve prayer service

Instead of loud singing and praise, maybe take the volume down a few notches with a contemplative prayer service. Pray for the new year – for the people in your congregation, your community, the nation.

Or maybe gather for a combination of loud praise and worship and quite prayer and reflection.

3. New Year’s Eve church potluck dinner

One thing that’s as sure as Christ’s return is that restaurants will be packed on New Year’s Eve! So, why not organize a potluck dinner and invite not only your church members but also people in the community who don’t want to wait an hour to get a table at a restaurant but also don’t want to spend the evening by themselves at home.

A potluck dinner could precede a New Year’s Eve worship and/or prayer gathering.

4. New Year’s Eve church game night

Board games are great way to have fun and build relationships. Invite your church members to invite their friends. Everyone can bring their favorite board games and a snack, appetizer or dessert to share.

Game night is a good option to do after a potluck dinner, prayer gathering or worship service.

5. Small Group New Year’s Eve parties

Many people who are not followers of Jesus are not interested in church events. But those same people would be open going to their neighbors, friends or co-workers New Year’s Eve party. “Church outreach” doesn’t always have to happen in the church building or be organized by church leaders.

Encourage your members to host New Year’s Eve parties with their life group, bible study group, or ministry team. And encourage them to invite their friends.

7 Church Outreach Ideas for the New Year

Beyond New Year’s Eve itself, the new year (January) is a great opportunity to connect with new people in the community. So many people want to turn the page on the last year, and get the new year off to a great start. With God’s help, you can help them do that!

6. New Years Bible Study

Launch a special Bible study series for the first few weeks of the new year, focusing on themes of renewal, new beginnings, and hope. Emphasize the importance of not just learning the bible, but but doing what it and the Holy Spirit say to do.

7. New Years fitness group

Every year the top new years resolutions include eating better, exercising, and losing weight. Your church can help people in your church and your community to meet those goals. The possibilities are endless – running groups, biking groups, cross-country skiing groups, Zumba classes, and more.

8. Healthy eating classes or groups

Again, lots of people set resolutions and goals to eat better in the new year. Some possibilities include:

 1. Weekly healthy cooking classes to introduce people to healthy recopies and cooking techniques.
 2. Weekly meal-making groups. Often people turn to fast food during the week because they are too busy to make healthy meals. Coming together to prepare healthy meals that can be easily heated up in the oven, microwave, or crockpot could be a game-changer.
 3. Healthy eating encouragement groups. Sometimes the key to eating healthier is the camaraderie, encouragement, and accountability of other people who also want to eat healthier.

9. Bible reading plans

Another common New Years goal people set is to read the bible more consistently. Creating a bible reading plan can help. Providing a way for people to receive an email or text reminder each day can help.

Providing a way for people to ask questions and discuss each day’s bible passage can be helpful too. This could be done in a Facebook group, a blog, or a group text.

10. Financial planning seminars and classes

Another big goal people set for the new year is to manage their money better. But many people don’t have a financial advisor they trust. And many financial advisors don’t teach biblical principles for putting God first in ones finances. Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and Crown Financial Ministries are a couple of options available.

11. Start new missional groups

Because people are so open to change and growth, the New Year is a great time to start just about anything. It could be related to a sport like pickleball or a hobby like painting. Or it could be a new ministry like helping refugees, foster families, Celebrate Recovery, Grief Care… Whatever people God is calling the people of your church to reach out to, love, and serve.

12. New Year’s neighborhood prayer walks

Our hope is that the people of your church have a new passion for reaching the people in your community this New Year. Doing neighborhood prayer walks together is a great way to stoke this passion!

God is at working in the people in your community. Pray that he would cause you to encounter people along your prayer walks that want prayer and are seeking Him. Expect God to do great things during your prayer walks!
