Series: Free Online Gifts Every Communicator Can Give

    Paul SteinbrueckBy Paul SteinbrueckDec 5, 2012Updated:Feb 20, 20234 Comments2 Mins Read

If you’re stressing out about your Christmas shopping, sorry but this post is not going to resolve that. But it is in the holiday spirit of giving that I want to talk about another kind of gift giving.

As communicators, we have the opportunity to give little gifts to people every day through the way we communicate.  These little gifts don’t require any money, just a generous heart.

For example, when you tweet/share a link to a blog post, you are giving the author of that blog post a gift. And if that blog post is helps your friends/followers in some way, you have given them a gift as well.

There are little ways to be generous and helpful in every form of online communications – email, blog, social media, website and more.

Each day this month, I’ll share a post with another “online gift” idea. I’ve got a few of them written down and ready to go already, but I’d love to hear and share your ideas as well.

In fact, the first gift you can give is to share your ideas here in a comment. And I’ll return the favor by mentioning you and including a link to your blog, website or profile when I blog about your idea.

Free Online Gifts Every Communicator Can Give

    1. An Up-to-Date Website
    2. Short, Well-Formatted Pages & Posts
    3. A Website People are Proud to Share
    4. The Freedom to Contribute
    5. Relevance & Perspective (re: Newtown, CT)
    6. Appreciation (Thank You and Merry Christmas!)

Here is a great tip for becoming more likable on purpose: enter the names of all your employees into your CRM and after every conversation that you have with one, go back to the program and enter in the info. Find out (and write down) their favorite sports team, their birthday, their kids names and ages, their anniversary, their favorite type of food etc and then bring up those topics in following conversations with them.

When you get your answer, don’t just go and enter it into your software but also write and schedule an email to go out to that person that next day.

Just watch what happens when you get good at this; your like-ability polls will skyrocket.

Interesting idea Ken. When you say, "write and schedule an email to go out to that person that next day" can you give an example of what that might look like?

Business is about "follow up" and to be successful in in business it's about the details. The most important thing that you could do is communicate that you were LISTENING.

A quick email saying," I never knew that you were a Football fan and that your favorite team is ____ , maybe we could watch a game together?"

This shows that you were invested in the conversation, and that you are willing to invest in the relationship.
