Easter is one of the best times of the year for churches to reach out to people in their communities.

Not only do more people attend church services on Easter Sunday than any other Sunday of the year, but many people who are not Christian are open to Easter-related family events.

Before we get to some great ideas for promoting and sharing your Easter services and events online, here are…

11 Easter ideas for churches

1) Host an Easter Egg Hunt. An Easter egg hunt is a classic way to celebrate the season and bring families together. Consider hosting an Easter egg hunt on your church property, or partner with a local park to host the event. Be sure to have plenty of eggs and candy for all the children, and consider offering other activities like face painting or balloon animals.

If you host your Easter egg hunt the Saturday before Easter, you can invite families to join you for your Easter service(s) the next day.

2) Hold a Sunrise Service.  A sunrise service is a beautiful way to start Easter Sunday. Hold the service outdoors to watch the sunrise together. Even better, gather in a public park (with permission) where passers-by can see and join you.  Offer hot coffee and pastries to warm them up.

3) Offer a Free Community Meal. Hosting a free community meal is a great way to reach out to those in need in your community. Consider offering breakfast on Easter, either immediately after your Sunrise Service or immediately before your regular Easter Sunday service.

Be sure to promote the event to your community and partner with other local organizations to spread the word.

4) Create Easter Baskets for Those in Need. Many families struggle to provide Easter baskets for their children. Consider creating Easter baskets for those in need in your community. Partner with local organizations to identify families who could benefit from this outreach.

Invite the families to pick up the Easter baskets from your church the Friday or Saturday before Easter. Or better yet, give them the option to have you bring the basket to them. Remember, it’s not just about the items in the basket, it’s about creating a personal connection, welcoming them, and letting them know you care about them.

5) Offer Easter Photos. Set up a photo booth at your church or at a community event and offer free Easter photos to attendees. This is a fun way to capture the spirit of the season and create lasting memories for families.

You can also share those photos on your social media profiles. (Be sure to get permission and ask families to sign a photo release.)

6) Have a Palm Sunday Parade. A Palm Sunday parade is a great way to celebrate the start of Holy Week. Consider having your church members create their own palms and parade through your community.

7) Host an Easter Play. Hosting an Easter play is a creative way to bring the story of the resurrection to life. Include members of your congregation in the production to make it more personal.

8) Offer Free Car Washes. Offer free car washes to your community in the days leading up to Easter. This is a good way to reach out to your community and show them that your church cares about their needs. Alternatively, you could ask for donations with those donations going to a good cause.

9) Create an Easter Prayer Walk. A prayer walk is a great way to encourage prayer and reflection during the Easter season. Create a trail with stations for prayer and reflection, and encourage attendees to take their time and meditate on the meaning of Easter.

Ideally, this would be available to people throughout Holy Week so they can do it on their own schedule and at their own pace.

10) Host a Concert. A concert is a great way to bring your community together in celebration of Easter. You don’t necessarily have to bring in a big name Christian artist. It could be your church’s worship team or choir. You could invite the choirs and worship team’s from other churches. Or you could put together a community orchestra and choir to perform something like Handel’s Messiah.

11) Host an Easter Craft Fair. An Easter craft fair is another fun opportunity to get people in your community on your church campus and make some connections. If you host it soon before Easter, you can invite people to your Easter services. You could also have your music ministry perform during the craft to get people into the spirit of the holiday and introduce them to your church’s style of music.

Hopefully, one or more of these Easter ideas for church will resonate with you and your church. Or maybe they will help spark a completely new and unique idea!

Once you and your church have discussed, prayed over, and decided which Easter outreach ideas you’re going to do this year, it’s time to think about how you’re going to get the word out. So, here are

11 Easter Online Outreach Ideas

1) Create a Landing Page. Create a dedicated landing page on your church website that provides all the details of your Easter services and events. This page should be easy to navigate, and the information should be displayed prominently.

2) Utilize Social Media. Social media is an effective way to reach out to your community and promote your Easter services and events. Utilize platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to create posts and share information about your Easter services and events.

3) Ask Your Congregation to Utilize Social media.  Posting info to the church’s social media profiles will only reach so many people. If you really want to maximize your social media reach, get the people of your church fired up and excited about sharing your church’s social media posts.

4) Use Hashtags. Utilize Easter-themed hashtags on social media to increase the visibility of your Easter services and events. Hashtags like #Easter, #EasterServices, and #EasterEvents can be used to reach a wider audience.

5) Share Testimonials. Share testimonies from members of your congregation about the impact that Easter has had on their lives. These testimonials can be shared on social media and on your website to help promote your Easter services and events.

6) Promote Early: Begin promoting your Easter services and events several weeks in advance. This will give your community ample time to plan to attend and make arrangements if necessary.

7) Utilize Email. Email is still one of the most effective ways to reach out to members of your congregation with info about your Easter services and events, especially people who may have fallen out of the habit of participating in Sunday services regularly. Send out regular emails leading up to Easter, and encourage your congregation to share the information with their friends and family.

8) Use Graphics and Videos. Create graphics and/or promotional videos for your Easter services and events. These visuals can be shared in your services, on your website, on social media and via email to catch the attention of your audience.

9) Use Online Advertising. Consider using online advertising to promote your Easter services and events. Platforms like Google Ads and Facebook Ads can be used to target specific audiences and promote your Easter services and events.

10) Partner with Local Organizations. Partner with local organizations to promote your Easter services and events. This could include partnering with local schools, community centers or the Chamber of Commerce to share information via email or on their social media channels.

11) Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Make sure people can find your church when the search online. For help with that check out The Ultimate Guide to Church SEO and How to Get Your Church Website to Rank for “Easter Service Near Me”

*BONUS* Perhaps the best Easter outreach idea doesn’t involve a church event at all… Maybe the best way to reach the people in your community is to equip and encourage every follower of Jesus in your church to be able to share their faith, their testimony, and the love of Jesus with the people they already know in their neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and community organizations!

Easter is the time to share the love and hope we can only experience in Jesus.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Everyone is looking to get into the Christmas spirit.

Some people may be looking for fun activities they can do with their family. Others may be struggling with loneliness, physical needs, stress or depression and wondering if there really is a God behind Christmas that gives peace, hope, and joy.

This is why Christmas is one of the best opportunities for your church to connect with people in your community through Christmas outreach events. As you think and pray about ways to share Jesus with you, we ‘ve got some Christmas outreach ideas to share with you and your church.

12 Christmas Outreach Ideas for Churches

1. Christmas Gift Drive for Underprivileged Children

Organize a Christmas gift drive or “Angel Tree” to collect gifts for children in need. Look for opportunities to partner with local schools, nonprofits and businesses.

The Christians gift drive could be combined with a Christmas party for the kids and families receiving the gives, giving you the opportunity to connect with them personally, invite them to Christmas Eve services, give them a tour of your church, and possibly even share the gospel with them.

2. Christmas Caroling in the Community

Form a choir or singing group to go caroling in the community, spreading holiday cheer at nursing homes, hospitals, public spaces and residential areas.

People will ask you about your group, so be prepared to introduce yourself and invite people to your Christmas Eve services or other Christmas events. Bring printed invitations that include your web address, email address and phone number.

3. Adopt-a-Family

Identify families facing financial challenges and encourage church members to “adopt” a family by providing them with food, gifts, and other essentials.

Try to make it more than an a quick drop-off. Make connections, get to know the families you’re helping, exchange contact info, and invite them to gather with your church.

4. Community Christmas Dinner

Host a free Christmas dinner for the community, especially for those who may be alone during the holidays.

The dinner could be immediately before your Christmas Eve service, making it easier for guests to stay for the service. Or it could be hosted around lunch-time on Christmas Day, which could be a blessing for those who might otherwise spend Christmas day alone.

5. Holiday Craft Fair / Bake Sale / Fundraiser

There are so many creative ideas for Christmas crafts – ornaments, centerpieces, decorations, handmade gifts – the possibilities are endless!  People are constantly looking for new and unique Christmas gifts they can give to family and friends. So, Christmas craft fairs are enormously popular!

Here are some suggestions to make make the most of your church’s Christmas craft fair:

  1. Host it early in December while people still have money to spend and gifts to buy.
  2. Charge venders a fee for each table to raise money for a special cause.
  3. Live Christmas music. Have you choir or worship team play live music. Not only does this improve the ambiance  but it also introduces visitors to the music and worship leaders they would experience if they were to come to a worship service.
  4. Sell coffee and baked goods. Combine your Christmas craft fair with a Christmas bake sale.
  5. Promote it online. Make sure info about the craft fair is on your website and on your social media profiles. Share info with your Chamber of Commerce. If any of your vendors have their own websites or Etsy shops, cross-promote with them.
  6. Christmas Eve signage and invitations. As with all of these events, don’t miss the opportunity to share info about your Christmas Eve services and invite guests to join you.

6. Family Christmas Festival

Host a family-friendly Christmas festival at your church.  Provide games and snacks for kids. Maybe even photos with Santa.

7. Christmas Eve in the Park

Instead of asking visitors to come to you for Christmas Eve, consider doing your Christmas Eve service in a public place like a park.  Try to choose a location that gets some drive-by or foot traffic.  Consider doing it during the afternoon when people are more likely to be out and about.

8. Parents Shopping Day Out

Provide free or low cost childcare so the parents of young children can go Christmas shopping without them.

Give the kids a great experience so they will want to come back Christmas Eve or on a Sunday. And as with any event, try to make personal connections with the parents and personal invitations to your Christmas Eve services.

Make sure you use all the same safety and security check-in/check-out system that you use Sunday mornings with background-checked volunteers, so that parents feel confident leaving their children with you, and know first-hand they would comfortable bringing their children to Sunday school or children’s church on a Sunday.

9. Christmas Movie Night

Organize a free movie night for people in the community featuring a classic, family-friendly Christmas movie. If it’s not too cold, you could do it outside.  Make sure you have plenty of popcorn and hot chocolate!

10. Live Nativity Scene

Create a live nativity scene in a public space or on your church property, sharing the Christmas story with passersby. If you want to go all out and give people a unique experience, include live sheep, goats, a donkey, and maybe even wise men with camels!

11. Be Neighborly

Some of the best opportunities for outreach are not organized by the church itself but by regular Christ-followers being the church with their neighbors. Encourage the people of your church to be neighborly!

  • Bake cookies and give them to neighbors
  • Host a Christmas dinner or Christmas party for neighbors
  • Help older or disabled neighbors decorate for Christmas
  • Invite single neighbors to join your family for Christmas dinner

And encourage everyone to look for opportunities to share what Christmas and Jesus mean to them.

12. Engage people with Christmas in Social Media

Most people – even those who don’t yet follow Jesus – want to get in the Christmas spirit and enjoy the season.  This is a great opportunity for your church to share Christmas music/videos, Christmas quotes and Christmas devotionals.

To maximize your reach, don’t just share them on your church’s social media channels, but encourage your people to share them on their social media channels so their friends will see them.

One of the big challenges within churches is that to create genuine community, people need to do more together than just show up once a week for a service. The same is true schools, nonprofits and even businesses that want to create a team culture. Getting people together in person can be difficult, so one way to foster more interaction is to do it online.

Do you wish your website, blog and/or Facebook page had more visitors and engagement?

A volunteer of the month feature is an easy to way to create foster more engagement online. I guarantee every volunteer of the month feature you publish will get lots of comments and likes as other people within your organization add their expressions of gratitude.

How to Create a “Volunteer of the Month” Website Feature

There are many different ways to feature a “volunteer of the month,” but I believe the two things that will help the most are to include a visual of the volunteer (picture or video) and to have the volunteer answer some questions.

The questions could be a part of an interview captured on video. Or you could email questions to a volunteer, and include their answers and a photo in a blog post or Facebook post.

Questions to ask your Volunteer of the Month

Here are some suggestions…

  1. When did you start volunteering?
  2. Tell us about what you do in your volunteer role?
  3. What do you like most about volunteering?
  4. Tell us about your most memorable moment as a volunteer. It could be funny, meaningful, heartwarming, or whatever.
  5. What would you say to someone who sees this and wants to learn more about volunteering in a similar role?

Where to publish the Volunteer of the Month announcement

The best place to publish your Volunteer of the Month announcements is on your website, more specifically on the blog of your website. This is because with blog articles you can…

  • Enable comments – so people who are a part of your church or nonprofit can add their words of appreciation for the volunteer as well.
  • Include social share buttons – so people can easily share the announcements on their social channels
  • Organize and archive – Blog articles are automatically organized by date, and archived so people can view previous volunteers of the month

All of the custom designed websites our team creates for clients are built using WordPress, the #1 blogging platform on the planet. And our do-it-yourself WP-EZ Website Builder is also based on WordPress, so every website has blog functionality included.

Share your Volunteer of the Month

After you publish each Volunteer of the Month announcement, share it on your church or nonprofit’s social media accounts. For best results…

  • @mention the the volunteer, so they’re tagged in the posts.
  • Encourage others to like, comment and share.
  • Also like, comment and share using your personal social media accounts.

This is why we agree with Jim Fargiano when he said…

Gratitude and love are always multiplied when you give freely. It is an infinite source of contentment and prosperous energy. –Jim Fargiano

More benefits to showing appreciate to a Volunteer of the Month

While the primary motives for doing a Volunteer of the Month feature should be to recognize volunteers and build community, a side benefit is that creating fresh, interesting, and engaging content will help your website’s search rankings. In other words, it’s good for SEO.

If you’re tired of struggling on your own with web design or Christian SEO for your church, school, ministry or business, complete the form below (mobile) or to the right (desktop) to request a free phone consultation so we can discuss your situation and help you to discover how you and your organization can better live out your mission online.

I am blessed to have many people in my life I am tremendously thankful for, but it’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and go weeks, months or even years without expressing that gratitude.

While many of the classic ways to express appreciation are still available to us – a phone call, a card, saying “thank you” in person, because this blog is about online communication, I thought today I’d share some ways we can express our gratitude to people online

1) Share a “memory” on Facebook.

Facebook often shows a “memory” or photo we posted several years ago along with the option to share that memory. When you see a “memory” that includes a photo of you and a loved one, share it and include a note about how much they mean to you.

2) Send a private thank you note via text, email, or private message.

If you want to express your gratitude more privately consider a quick note via text, email or a private message on your preferred social network.  Be specific about what you appreciate about them.

This is much more meaningful than a general “Happy Thanksgiving!” or “Love you all!” message posted to everyone on a social platform, group text or group email.

3) Write a blog post about the impact someone has made in your life.

If you want to go bigger, consider a whole blog post in which you share the impact a person has had on your life. If you lead or do communications with an organization, blog posts a great way to express gratitude to your staff and volunteers.

4) Send or post a video thank you note.

Someone once said, “If a pictures is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a million.” Anyone with a smart phone can record a 30-60 second selfie video and either text it or post it to their favorite social media platform.

5) Post a positive online review to Google, Yelp or Facebook.

If you’re grateful for your church, a nonprofit you’re involved with, or even a business that’s served you well, give them a positive review. Your review will not only encourage the people in that organization, but it will encourage others to check them out and even help their search rankings, as we explain in the Ultimate Guide to Online Reviews.

6) Give someone special an online gift card.

Just about every company now offers gift cards online, so regardless of whether the person you appreciate enjoys peppermint lattes, historical fiction, crocheting holiday sweaters or even something more unusual chances are you can find an online gift card for it.

7) Express gratitude to God by sharing a Thanksgiving bible verse or quote image.

All the ideas above are for expressing gratitude to other people, but we can also express our gratitude to God online. It could be by sharing some of the 25 Thanksgiving Bible Verses or 25 Thanksgiving Quotes Images we published earlier this month. Perhaps thanking God for answering a prayer, providing in a time of need, healing, or for the people in your life.

The great thing about expressing gratitude is that not only is the person we thank blessed by it, but we are blessed by it too because it causes us to recognize how much we have to be thankful for.

The post 12 Thanksgiving Church Outreach Ideas appeared first on Christian Web Trends Blog: Church Websites, Design, SEO.

Thanksgiving is a time for reflection, gratitude, and togetherness.

It’s also a wonderful opportunity for churches to strengthen their bonds with the community and spread the message of love and gratitude.

If you’re looking for ways to make this Thanksgiving season more meaningful for your congregation and your neighbors, we’ve got 12 creative ideas for church outreach, activities, events, serving opportunities, and services that can truly make a difference.

12 Thanksgiving Church Outreach Ideas

1. Community / Church Thanksgiving Dinner

Host a free Thanksgiving dinner for the people in your church and your community. This is an opportunity to help those who might not be able to afford a Thanksgiving meal, as well as to befriend and extend community to those who might otherwise spend Thanksgiving alone.

  • Encourage volunteers to help serve and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
  • Encourage your church people to sit and eat with people who are not a part of your church.
  • Encourage people to hang out after dinner by showing the football game or the dog show.

2. Thanksgiving Food Drive

Organize a food drive to collect non-perishable items and distribute them to local families in need.  Your church could also partner with a local food pantry that is already helping those in need of food. In addition to dropping off food, there may be opportunities to serve with food pantry volunteers, packing boxes or gift baskets for people in the community.

3. Thanksgiving Church Service Ideas

Many churches do a “Thanksgiving Sunday” service the weekend after Thanksgiving. Some other Thanksgiving service ideas include:

  • Thanksgiving Day church service – Very few churches actually gather for a worship service on the day of Thanksgiving. Your church could have an 11am service with Thanksgiving dinner afterwards.
  • Thanksgiving Eve church service – With so may people out of town on Thanksgiving day and Thanksgiving weekend, another option would be to do a Wednesday night service. A church I was one a part of  used to do a “Pie and Praise” every year the evening before Thanksgiving. We would gather for worship and bring a pie to share afterwards.
  • Open Mic – Open up the service and give people the opportunity to briefly share what what they are thankful for this year.
  • Testimonies – Have a time in the service where people share their testimonies of how they came to follow Jesus and how grateful they are for God’s grace.
  • Thanksgiving scripture, hymns, songs, and prayer – There are lots of scripture passages, hymns, songs, and prayers related to Thanksgiving and giving thanks. More than enough to fill any church service or gathering.

4. Christian Thanksgiving Messages

More than likely, your pastor is going to preach a Christian Thanksgiving message during your Thanksgiving service. But people in your community may be open to hearing a Thanksgiving message at other times and through other means.

If your church is not gathering on Thanksgiving, your pastor could share a Thanksgiving devotional online on Thanksgiving day.  Or you could post Thanksgiving messages and devotionals throughout the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.

5. Thanksgiving Youth Group Ideas

Thanksgiving is also a great opportunity to teach teens about gratitude in fun ways.  Some Thanksgiving youth group games, activities, and service ideas include:

  • Thanksgiving scavenger hunt
  • Pumpkin pie relay race
  • Thanksgiving trivia game
  • Thank you drive-by. Load up kids in vehicles, drive by church member’s houses, say “Thank you!” Maybe give them a card, a treat, or a gift basket.
  • Thank you note writing. Provide blank “Thank You” cards and take 10-20 minutes for kids to write thank you notes to their parents, friends, and even God.

6. Thanksgiving Cooking Classes

Think about how you you felt the first time you hosted a Thanksgiving meal (or would feel, if you’ve never hosted). It can be a nerve-racking experience, trying to time all the dishes to come out at the same time, and worrying about whether the turkey is going to cooked all the way through but not dried out.

Offer cooking classes to teach people how to prepare a delicious Thanksgiving meal…

  • How do you cook a Thanksgiving turkey so it’s moist and delicious?
  • What’s the best way to carve a turkey?
  • Do you have an awesome recipe for green bean casserole you can share?

At the end of your cooking classes, you could give away free turkeys to those struggling to afford Thanksgiving dinner.

7. Thanksgiving Craft Fair

Host a craft fair where church members can sell handmade items, and the proceeds can go towards a charitable cause.  Some ideas to take your craft fair to the next level…

  • Open it up to artisans in the community, allow them to rent a table or booth.
  • Sell fall-favorite foods and drinks
  • Have you church’s worship team play music throughout the event

8. Adopt a Family

Have your congregation “adopt” families for Thanksgiving, providing them with a full meal, including a turkey and all the fixings.

9. Prayer Walk

Organize a prayer walk in the community, praying for the well-being and thanksgiving of local residents.

10. Thanksgiving Care Packages

Create care packages with food and other essentials and distribute them to elderly or isolated community members.

11. Give Thanks in Action

Instead of words alone, challenge your congregation to show their gratitude through acts of kindness throughout the season. Provide opportunities for people to share stories of how God worked in them and through them while doing these acts of kindness.

12. Engage people with Thanksgiving in Social Media

Most people – even those who don’t yet follow Jesus – appreciate encouragement online in social media.  This is a great opportunity for your church to share Thanksgiving bible verses, inspirational Thanksgiving quotes and funny and inspiring Thanksgiving videos plus Thanksgiving messages and devotionals as mentioned earlier.

To maximize your reach, don’t just share them on your church’s social media channels, but encourage your people to share them on their social media channels so their friends will see them.

Email has been widely available for more than 25 years. A lot has changed in that time!

Spammers have given email marketing and email communication a bad rap. And with the more recent rise of other forms of communication like social media, texting and mobile apps, some people have wondered…

Is email dead?

Nothing could be further from the truth!  Email is still alive and well.

If you are struggling to reach people, some of your people aren’t very involved, or you’re not growing as you’d like, email done right can help with those problems.

We have created a new course, Email Communication that Works!

Check out the first lesson: 5 Reasons Email Is Still Incredibly Valuable

If you prefer to read, here are the highlights…

1) Nobody checks websites regularly.

It’s really important to keep your website up to date with news and information, but it’s rare for someone to visit a website unless they’re already aware of something and want more info. You have to notify people (and usually multiple times) to keep them informed.

2) 90% of American adults use email.

According to a 2022 report by market.us, the vast majority of people use email.  This compares to 70% of adults who use Facebook (reported by Pew Research) and 40% who use Instagram (also reported by Pew Research) And it goes down from there with other platforms and means of communication.

3) Email open rates are still good.

Open rates for emails sent by faith-based organizations are around 45% (as reported by Constant Contact).  This compares to 9% of followers see an Instagram posts and 4% of followers see a Facebook post (via SocialInsider).  Social media sites continue to show fewer posts from your friends and the organizations you follow, and more ads and short videos.

4) You own your email list.

With social media sites, you don’t own your list of contacts/followers. If FB, Insta, Twitter, were to shut down, ban you, or limit your communication, you would lose all your contacts.

5) Your people want your emails.

If you’re a church, your people want to know what’s going on. If you’re a ministry, your supporters want to know what you’re doing and how they can help. If you’re a business, your customers want to know about new products, special offers, and professional insight.

Bonus: If you’re a church leader and your main form of communication is the Sunday bulletin, keep in mind that on any given Sunday half your people are not there. And of those who are there, half don’t read the bulletin and the other half forget what was in it the minute they step out the door. Your people need to be reminded via email of what’s going on.)

But it’s also possible to do email badly in ways that frustrate and annoy people to where they don’t open your emails or unsubscribe. So, in future videos in this course we’ll be sharing best practices, mistakes to avoid, instructions for setting up your email systems and more.  Stay tuned!
