How Do I Create a Website?

Paul SteinbrueckBy Paul SteinbrueckJan 13, 201410 Comments2 Mins Read

How do I create a websiteStephen Covey wrote in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People that all things are created twice – first mentally, then physically.

In this video, we provide 6 questions to help you create your website concept before you start building your website.

6 Questions to Help You Create Your Website

    1. What do I want to accomplish? What are the purpose and goals of my website?
    2. Who is my target audience?  Who am I trying to serve? What do they have need of?
    3. What functionality does my website need? What does my website need to be able to do to reach the goals and serve my target audience?
    4. What content do I need? What information – text, images, audio and/or video will help my audience?
    5. What layout and colors?  What type of layout will help my website accomplish its goals? What colors and style fit with my logo and resonate with my audience?
    6. How am I going to build my website? With a web development program, a content management system, an online web builder or by hiring a professional website developer?

By answering these questions before you start building your website, you can create a clear vision for your organization’s website before you start building it, which will help the website development process go much better.

What benefits do you see from creating a mental concept of a website before building it?  Are there any other questions you would recommend answering before building a site?

Great questions to ask. The biggest issue we run into with our clients is the content and graphics. These are great questions for anyone needing to create a website. If you have all these down, the rest is easy.

Braden, we run into that challenge as well. That's why we work with our clients to create a content map before we start developing their website. That way they can be working on content while we're working on the theme, installation, configuration, etc.

      Short but good article!

These are great points to bring up for any type of web project. @Braden I also second the need to think about content and graphics!

Yes you need questions and answers on those questions, before you start building your website. You can't just go and build website and then ask yourself what if I need this or I need that, because then you only wasting time.

        Absolutely, Robert!

well…I did mostly what you suggest! And I di pretty good! But it's also good to see a list …makes it easier to focus!

Way to go, Linda! Glad to hear you put so much thought into your website before building it, and the end result was good.

Thanks Paul! These are the top questions that a business owner must ask himself before creating his own website. Like they say, it's better to know the basics first before going advanced.

All extremely valid points Paul! Whenever I build a site for a client I ask them to give me at least three examples of sites they like the look and functionality of. We then then review the sites and decide what exactly it is they like about each one. I have found that visual examples greatly aid the development process. Thanks for the article!
