Is Google Following You Around Town?

    Kurt SteinbrueckBy Kurt SteinbrueckMay 21, 2014Updated:Feb 8, 202315 Comments2 Mins Read

Google has an interesting new feature they are rolling out.

Have you ever searched in Google for information about a product?  If you are like 99.9% of the Internet connected world, you have.  Now, imaging that after you did your search, you left the house and were driving through town for no particular reason and all the sudden your phone buzzes.  You check your phone and there’s Google letting you know that the store you are currently driving past has the product you were searching for earlier.

Well, you don’t have to imagine anymore.  Google announced earlier this month,

“You’ve been looking for the perfect pair of hiking boots online, but haven’t gotten around to pulling the trigger. Starting today, if you’re out and about and near a store that carries those boots, you might see a Google Now card showing you the product and price to remind you that you wanted them. Now all you have to do is pop into the store and check if they’re in stock!”

I’ll tell you about this new feature and other updates to Google and Bing in the video below:

    *Update 05-21-2014*
In the video I mention that there were indications that Google may be getting ready to release some major updates.  Well, Google just announced that they released an update of Panda (not a refresh, but an update to the algorithm) that affects about 7.5% of US queries.  They also released an update of their Pay Day Loan algorithm, targeting “very spammy queries”.

Not only has "Big Brother" arrived on the Federal government level but people are excited to engage now on Google. Are we all crazy? Do we want to be tracked every step of our lives? not me……………Thank you.

It does seem to be moving in that direction, for better or for worse.

I don't see any way out anytime soon, apart from staying away from the internet completely.

      • Kurt Steinbrueck on May 22, 2014 9:38 am

It would be hard. I'm not sure about the cell phone options that don't track, but DuckDuckGo has been growing and developing their search engine more. They actually just revamped their site and launched several new features this week. Their big claim to fame is they don't track searchers. That doesn't prevent Google, Facebook and others from tracking you on other sites that have their ads and plugins, but it's one way to avoid some of it.

What's next??? Will Facebook send an alert to your phone when your driving past a florist if your wife posted that she is frustrated that you've been watching too much football?

There is an app that will inform you when a friend is nearby. The app creators talk it up as a way to connect more with people, though I heard some people referring to it as the app that helps you avoid people who you don't want to see 😉

BTW – You may want to get those flowers…

There is no doubt about the fact that they are following you. All depends on how smartly you handle your browser cookies (best option is not to handle and just delete them every time you exit the browser). Another way is by setting the Ad Preferences of your Google account from the settings.

Good point, but that's only half the story. You would also need to prevent Google from monitoring your location if you have an Android phone or other phone with Google apps.

The privacy debate has raged since the internet started.

      • Kurt Steinbrueck on May 27, 2014 1:29 pm

Yep, though it seems to be intensifying over the past few years and more and more information is being tracked and stored. Do you think it will ever hit a tipping point or do you think it will just continue to be a debate that amounts to nothing but talk?

    6. Angelika on May 23, 2014 6:09 pm

Oh dear, part of me thinks 'how exciting is that!' and the other part thinks 'oh no, that would be awful'. Just like everything else, with the good comes the bad 🙁

      • Kurt Steinbrueck on May 27, 2014 1:30 pm

My reaction was similar. The feature itself actually sounds quite helpful, but it's just one more way I'm being tracked and commercialized.
