Trick to Getting Info from Old Facebook Pages to Show Up in the News Feed

    Paul SteinbrueckBy Paul SteinbrueckMar 30, 2009Updated:Mar 30, 200916 Comments2 Mins Read

facebookFacebook recently gave churches, businesses, and other organizations the critically important ability to have updates, links, and photos appear in their “fans” news feeds.  However, as I wrote about recently, this is not happening for most fans of older pages.  After continuing to experiment with my church’s Facebook page, I think I’ve found a solution.

If a person goes to the organization’s Facebook Page and removes themself as a “fan” and then becomes a “fan” again, updates from the organization’s FB Page seem to begin showing up in their news feed.

The next challenge if you manage an old FB Page for an organization is how do you notify your “fans” and ask them to do this?

The “Send an update to Fans” FB Page feature doesn’t seem to work.  At least it does not deliver a message to “fans” in the same way you can with a group or an individual.  If you happen to also have a Facebook group for your org, you could get “fans” a message that way, though it’s likely some fans will not be members of that group.  The only other option I can think if is to send each fan individually a message, which could take a lot of time depending on how many “fans” your org has.

If you run a FB Page dates back before the big changes implemented March 13, I’d appreciate any feedback or insight you may have from your work with FB pages.

Are your “fans” getting status updates, links, notes, etc in their news feed?  Is the remove yourself as a fan and re-becoming a fan working for your fans?  Any other insight or challenges?

I went into settings and toggled all the options off/on or on/off and then posted to test and it worked.

Hi Daniel, thanks for comment. Are you saying changing these settings got the page updates to show in fans’ news feeds?

      Allow fans to post photos
      Allow fans to post videos
      Allow fans to post links

I was having the same problem. I went in and did that and posted a update and it worked, still not sure why, but I can’t explain it any other way.

Paul I had the same problem again about being marked as a spammer on the Evangelism Blog. I tried to send a message using the ticket thing, but was told that it must be for someone else and not ourchurch main site.

Hi Daniel, thanks for your persistence. Not sure why you keep getting flagged as spam. I restored your comment from blog moderation purgatory.

I presume the “ticket thing” you’re referring to is our help desk? I would appreciate it if you could send more specific details about that to support [at] ourchurch [dot] com

      Thanks!

      Hi to all,

I have the same problem creating our website Facebook Fan Page. I have tried to post in our wall and it doesn’t appear in our fans newsfeed. Do you have any solution for this? I’m desperate.

      Thanks,
      Diana

Diana, did you try to the solution suggested in the article? Ask your fans to remove themselves as fans and the become a fan again. Before you do that, you might want to try Daniel’s suggestion of going into the page’s options and toggling the settings off and then on. Post an update and let us know how it goes.
