    7 communciations resolutionsHi and a belated Happy New Year to you all!  I thought I’d kick off a new year of blogging by sharing with you my 7 Communications Resolutions of 2013.  These are the areas where I am going to focus on improving in the new year. One of my resolutions is to make better use of video, so that’s why I’m introducing this series with a video.  Take a look…

      Good short presentation, Paul! Get a lighter colored shirt (not white). It looks like an ill-defined mass of black in a small window, and not much better full screen. White board works OK. But, again, hard to read in a small video window. Print larger? Get a larger white board? Sound is excellent. Picture quality is excellent (excluding shirt color). I, too, am starting to use more video with my students. It is a challenging, learning experience! I look forward to the rest of the series.

        Thanks Ken. I appreciate the feedback. I'm not a huge fan of the whiteboard either, but I want to be able to create a lot of content quickly, and the whiteboard was a way to create a visual element without having to delve into video editing.

      Hello Paul. You don't need larger whiteboard. Your writing is too small that makes it hard to read. But….whiteboard makes me feel like in a class….and it is boring, makes me sleepy. Why don't you print out your points in pages with colored readable fonts? It would look more interesting.

        I'll give it some thought, but part of the reason I'm doing videos is to save time and that would take time.

      Great ideas Paul! Batch create and reuse are key. One other suggestion for quality – talk to the camera. When you turned to the board and spoke, it was hard to hear.

        Thanks Diane. I should probably get a lapel mic so that won't be an issue.

      My main resolution in re: communication 2013 is to develop a decision tree to pre-determine what gets on the church website, what gets announced from the platform, what gets printed in the bulletin. We want to help people find the information they need, when they need it and eliminate the "clutter" on Sunday morning.

        That's a great resolution! Not only will that reduce the clutter but it will also free you up so you're not making decisions on every item every week. Staff and volunteers will appreciate it because it won't seem arbitrary or unfair.

      Paul, great video! Of course there's 10 different ways to shoot this video, however, I believe you picked an effective, efficient, time-saving approach. Well-done! The key to online video is quantity more than quality (quality referring to number of videos, not length; and of course, the content needs to be relevant still).
      My goal is to be more consistent with video blogging too!
      May I ask, what kind of video capture and/or camera did you use for this video?

      Thanks! Does that need to hook into your computer then to capture it? (I'm guessing yes if it's a webcam). I have a built-in webcam to my Macbook pro, do you think the c920 would be better? Seems like it picks up Audio pretty good too…
