social media church pastors time managementTuesday, I had the privilege of being DJ Chuang’s guest on the Social Media Church G+ hangout on air.  One of the questions DJ asked me was, how do you advise pastors and church leaders to manage their time on social media so it doesn’t become a 24/7 thing?

Here’s an excerpt from the hangout with my answer:

What do you think?  How would you advise pastors and church leaders to manage their time on social media so it doesn’t become a 24/7 thing?

You can listen to a podcast of the full interview, plus get notes and related links on SocialMediaChurch.net at Paul Steinbrueck of Christian Web Trends: Episode 43 or watch the full interview on YouTube.

Here's my daily routine: While I'm in bed having my morning coffee, I post a Daily Devotional from my denomination on my church's FB page (which automatically goes to our Twitter feed, too).

Then I go on Hootsuite and autoschedule 5 inspiring quotes throughout the day for my Twitter, FB, G+ and LinkedIn accounts.

I then go on Unfollowers.me and personally thank any new followers and follow them back if I'm not already. I also try and consistently follow 10 new people a day.

Those things alone garner lots of good response, takes about 15 minutes, and I'm done before my second cup of coffee.

Then when I get to my office at church and I find interesting things to share throughout the day, I'll send them out via the Hootlet extension on Safari which ROX.

I also blog twice a week (Mon & Fri), and try and do some short video messages a few times a week, as well. They all get posted via Hootsuite to all my outlets, as well.

This doesn't take up my whole day, and it made my Klout score go from 24 to 61 in only four months and my Twitter follower count increases with QUALITY followers a bit each day – now closing in on 600 🙂

Slow, organic growth with personal responses and lots of RT-ing really gets the best response and doesn't take up a huge chunk of my day.

Great insight, Shawn! Thanks for sharing your social media strategy & schedule with us. I think it's important to have a plan like and not simply ad lib every day.
