Want Better Search Rankings? Start with This 10-point Checklist

Paul SteinbrueckBy Paul SteinbrueckMar 9, 20184 Comments3 Mins Read

Our focus this month is on helping churches and other Christian organizations improve their websites by fixing the 10 most common website problems.

The 80-20 rule says, 80% of the problems are caused by 20% of the issues.  Therefore, we created this 10-Point Website Checklist that addresses 80% of the problems we see with church websites.

While the primary purpose of this checklist is to help churches and Christian organizations make their websites look and function better for website visitors, getting a website to pass all 10 points on the checklist will also result in better search rankings.

    Here are 3 reasons why:

    1) The Best Church Websites Have a Memorable Domain Name

If you have a free website that does not have its own domain name, you are going to have a hard time ranking well in search engines for anything.  Therefore, if you really want people to find your website – and church leaders this means if you really want to reach the people in your community – you need your own domain name.

    2) The Best Church Websites Are Mobile-Friendly

Google penalizes websites that are not mobile-friendly with lower search rankings in their mobile search rankings. Enough said.

    3) People share and link to websites that look good and function well

Have you ever liked an article, blog post, or something else an organization is doing, but not shared it or told anyone about it because the website was embarrassingly ugly or hard to use?

    I know I have.

I know people who will not share links to their own church’s website because it makes them cringe.

Two things that help search rankings are social shares and links. If people are embarrassed by your website, you will not get many shares or links. But if you can eliminate the most common, most embarrassing problems, you’ll get a lot more links and shares.

The other 8 items on the 10-point checklist all address common problems that make websites look bad and hard to use such as broken images, too many text colors, and complicated navigation menus.

    The bottom line is…

If you want better search rankings, start by making sure your website is free of common problems.

WOW Paul 🙂 Long time no see. 🙂 Thank you for you shared us great tips again, still very useful and informative. And I have a question, do you think that social share now more and more important for rank than links? 🙂

Hi Robby, no I think links are still more important.
