The Impact of Google’s Mobile-Friendly Update

    Paul SteinbrueckBy Paul SteinbrueckApr 22, 2015Updated:Jan 27, 20231 Comment2 Mins Read

Yesterday was the big day… Mobilegeddon… the day Google launched it’s algorithm update to penalize sites that are not mobile friendly in its mobile search results.

Some may find this shocking, but somehow the sun still rose this morning. 😉

In all seriousness, this is a big deal because this a major update, and Google is the biggest source of new website visitors for most churches, schools, nonprofits and businesses.

Here are 3 things we know one day into the mobile-friendly update…

    1) Google has begun rolling out the update.  Google announced on their search blog yesterday, “today we’re starting to roll out a change that we announced two months ago to take into account whether a site is mobile-friendly when we rank search results on mobile phones.”

    2) The rollout will take about a week.  Most people are not seeing any change in mobile search rankings now, but that’s because it’s still early.

    3) 4.7% more sites are now mobile-friendly.  Google stated on their blog, “In just the two months since we announced this change, we’ve seen a 4.7 percentage point uptick in the proportion of sites that are mobile friendly”  That is a significant change when you consider how many millions of websites are online.

What we don’t yet know is how far sites that aren’t mobile friendly are and will be dropping in the search results.  We’ll have to wait until the launch is further along and more analysis is done before we’ll know that.

If your site is still not mobile-friendly, now is the time to make it so.

If we at OurChurch.com can help you do that, contact us and schedule a time to talk.

What do you think of the mobile-friendly update so far?
