The Best Church Websites: 2) Are Mobile-Friendly

The Best Church Websites: 2) Are Mobile-Friendly

As part of the Best Church Websites month, we continue to discuss features and attributes that every church website should have. Today, we look at the importance of your website being mobile-friendly or “responsive.”

What is a mobile-friendly website and why is it so important?

Mobile-friendly is the ability for your website to be viewed well on smartphones and tablets, as well as notebooks and desktop computers.

We also use the term “responsive” to describe a website that “responds” to the size of the screen it is being viewed on and display the website in a layout that is optimal for that device.  This means the way the website looks on a computer will be slightly different compared to when it is viewed using a smartphone or a tablet.

The reason this is important is because more and more people are using their phones and tablets to surf the web.  In fact, according to Statista, approximately 55% of all website traffic now comes from mobile devices.  That means more people are viewing websites using phones and tablets than notebooks and desktop computers.

If your website isn’t responsive and mobile-friendly, more than half the people coming to your site are doing the frustrating “Pinch & Zoom” or they are leaving your site as quickly as they got there.

    This is why…

It is absolutely crucial for your church website to be mobile friendly.  Otherwise, you are snubbing half of your visitors. – Mark Steinbrueck

How to tell if a website is mobile friendly

In December 2023, Google discontinued its mobile-friendly test tool. So, we now recommend using Bing’s mobile friendly test.

Action Step #1: I highly recommend you click and test your website.

If you have a site that is not mobile friendly, it is time to make a change.

Action Step #2: If you have an older website built with our NE1 Website Builder or WP-EZ 1.0, we strongly encourage you to migrate to WP-EZ 2.0. You can find migration help pages and video tutorials here.

Action Step #3: If your website was not built by OurChurch.Com or our web builder, know that all custom church websites and websites built with OurChurch.Com’s WP-EZ 2.0 web builder are responsive and mobile-friendly.   We offer the best church website builder for those who want to build the site yourself as well as custom church website design that we build for you.
